Pandemic Issues: Faculty Value Alignment and Burnout

Burnout among faculty members impacts physical, cognitive, and emotional functioning has negative socioeconomic consequences downstream. Prior to the pandemic, were already reporting high levels of burnout, which is characterized by depersonalization, exhaustion, a lack personal accomplishment. Previous research reported that value incongruence functions as one strongest predictors depersonalization (and subsequently) turnover intention. This study provides snapshot alignment burnout at regional public university in months following pandemic-induced pivot remote learning. Results from our survey (N = 58) suggest concerning trend for subset who greatly identify with values their workplace are severely impacted COVID-19 related stressors. For these people, higher predicts depersonalization. These results raise possibility moral injury educators, may experience conflict between maintaining rigor they previously required demonstrating radical empathy students living through pandemic. have implications college administrators, instructors, educational researchers.
